M Versailles-Inspired NYC Townhouse Is This Week’s Most Expensive New Listing

A Versailles-inspired townhouse on Manhattan’s Upper East Side has landed back on the market. Even with a steep reduction on its 2013 asking price of $114 million, the $88-million mansion is this week’s most expensive new listing on realtor.com®.

The lavishly redone home was purchased by billionaire businessman Vincent Viola and his wife, Teresa Viola, for $20 million in 2005. The couple then proceeded to totally revamp the opulent six-floor, 20,000-square-foot residence. The gut renovation only left the historic facade intact, while transforming the entire interior, according to an article in The New York Times.

Originally built in the 1880s, the deluxe residence with an elevator includes amenities such as an indoor saltwater pool and spa, rooftop terrace, a panic room inside the master-suite dressing room, and a red-velvet movie theater with a balcony.

The six-bedroom, nine-bathroom layout is set inside a 40-foot wide mansion with a formal entry that boasts 14-foot-high ceilings and opens to a rotunda with 28.5-foot ceilings that soar to the third floor. 

The great room spans 40 feet, with French doors opening to Juliet balconies and floor-to-ceiling windows. For wealthy bookworms, the home also includes a double-height library. The massive dining room can “easily accommodate 40 guests or more at a sit-down dinner.“ The huge kitchen features “every cooking appliance known to a chef,” including a wood-burning pizza oven. 

Other thoughtful details include heated onyx marble floors in the entry hall. There are heated sidewalks out front for automatic snow removal, as well as a water filtration system. 

The home made headlines as the most expensive townhouse in New York City when it first went up for sale five years ago. It has bounced on and off the market since, but briefly caused a stir when a deal to buy it was struck last year. The potential blockbuster purchase apparently fell through, and the home was made available to lease for $175,000.

Vincent Viola also made his share of headlines. The Brooklyn-born son of a truck driver and army veteran was briefly President Trump’s nominee for Secretary of the Army. (He withdrew his name from consideration, due to business conflicts.)

The businessman’s most famous investment is his 2013 purchase of the NHL team the Florida Panthers. According to Forbes, he is worth $2.8 billion.
