Most folks are blissfully unaware that there actually is a body of water within Los Angeles. The sprawling metro is home to Silver Lake, a commercial and residential district located right on the edge of the city’s bustling downtown.

So when you spot a listing for a $2.3 million “lake view” home in the hills of L.A., it isn’t a mirage. We found a stylish house that’s truly located above a large, silvery oasis in this urban desert.

Even so, it’s surprising to find a house with a lake view that might rival something you’d see in the Southern California mountain resort communities such as Big Bear or Lake Arrowhead.

“I was born and raised in this area, and I have yet to see any property with such amazing reservoir and city views,” says listing agent Lori Ramirez of Coldwell Banker. “It’s the best view I’ve seen in 35 years.”

There’s a reason the 2,982-square-foot hillside home has had only one owner since it was designed by prominent architect J.G. Kitashima in 1977.

The original owners, Richard and Gladys Pettibone, lived there for almost 40 years, raising their family in the famously diverse community. Now that the Pettibones have passed on, the house is being offered in a trust sale by their children.

The remarkable lake view is not the only interesting thing that might attract buyers.

“It’s a time capsule from the ’70s in pristine condition,” adds Ramirez. The home’s ’70s-era design comes with an Asian aesthetic.

“It has a bit of the Japanese flair,” says Ramirez, noting the Zen grounds with a koi pond and pagoda and the Asian-inspired wall coverings. The home was built in the post-and-beam style with floor-to-ceiling windows, earth-tone tile, and iron detailing.

There are 2.5 baths and three bedrooms, including a master suite with a spacious bath with a Japanese soaking tub, dressing area, and balcony. The kitchen opens up to a bar and a breakfast room, for casual dining and cocktails.

These days, Silver Lake is a magnet for hipsters, attracting young buyers. While it offers hilly neighborhoods with views, the area’s prices haven’t skyrocketed as in communities farther west, including Brentwood, Bel Air, and Beverly Hills.

The area is famed for its cutting-edge eateries, art scene, and night spots, which blend into neighboring Los Feliz, where the Hollywood elite have been living since the days of silent pictures.
