Inside Mike Pence’s Home: 6 Things That Cast Our Veep in a Whole New Light

Mike Pence might not surface in the spotlight as much as President Donald Trump, but still, as our country’s vice president, he absolutely merits some attention. For starters: Anyone know where this guy lives? Anyone?

While everyone knows that U.S. presidents reside in the White House, vice presidents ever since Walter Mondale have settled down in a lesser-known location a few miles away in D.C., at the U.S. Naval Observatory. Pence’s family is the seventh vice presidential clan to inhabit the 33-room Queen Anne-style home on these grounds—and rest assured, they’ve done tons on the renovation/decoration front to make this place feel like home.

Allow us to take you on an inside tour of Pence’s home that will make you see our nation’s Veep in a whole new light.

The ‘boyfriend room’

For starters, Pence and his wife, Karen, have three grown kids: Their eldest, Michael Jr., is married. But their daughters—Charlotte, 24, and Audrey, 22—are unhitched, and still live at home.

But whenever Charlotte or Audrey have male suitors come a-knocking, Pence has the perfect place for them to crash. He calls “the boyfriend room.” In other words, there is absolutely no way any of these guys are sleeping in his daughters’ bedrooms. In fact, according to The Washington Post, the boyfriend room has twin beds in case both Charlotte and Audrey have company calling; they can crash together!

A beehive

According to Time, Karen added a beehive to her abode—outside, of course—to raise awareness of the plight of honeybees and their dwindling population.

“All types of pollinators, such as bees, butterflies, birds and bats, are critical to providing our nation’s food, fiber, fuel and medicine,” Pence said in a statement. “However, our beekeepers have been losing colonies for many years. This presents a serious challenge to our ability to produce many of the agricultural products that we enjoy today.”

A crystal ball

Who would have thought that the Pences would have this central tool of soothsayers everywhere? Prominently displayed on the library coffee table—where they host regular Bible study—this artifact could be purely decorative. Even so, it seems odd, given crystal balls find their roots in pagan religions, and the Pences are devoutly evangelical.

Basketball court

Yep, much like former President Barack Obama, the veep likes to relax or work up a sweat by shooting hoops, so he installed a basketball court. And since he’s such a fan of the movie “Hoosiers,” which he declared the “greatest sports movie ever made,” he has this team’s logo plastered across the concrete.

Karen’s watercolor art

Karen isn’t only an apiary enthusiast, but a watercolor artist as well. Her painting of pink peonies (Indiana’s state flower) hangs in the sunroom.

Animals galore

“We’re just pet people,” Karen has told USA Today. Harley, an Australian shepherd, has fun “playing guard” on the basketball court, or swimming laps in the heated pool. Meanwhile, Charlotte’s rabbit, Marlon Bundo, has hopped into the spotlight as the star of a children’s book Charlotte wrote, “Marlon Bundo’s A Day in the Life of the Vice President.”

Of course, Bundo became an even bigger star when TV host John Oliver published a parody in which the rabbit is gay—a critique of Pence’s LGBT views. But even Charlotte bought the book, explaining, “It doesn’t have to be divisive. … I think that everybody can come together over Marlon.” Marlonbundo now boasts over 32,800 Instagram followers and counting.

All of which is to say that life in the vice president’s house is anything but dull.
