Will ‘Fixer Upper’ Win an Emmy? 10 Show Highlights That Suggest It Will

“Fixer Upper” was nominated for its first Emmy—congratulations, Chip and Joanna Gaines! This hit HGTV renovation show was selected for the Structured Reality Program category, up against five other contenders ranging from ABC’s “Shark Tank” to Spike TV’s “Lip Sync Battle.”

Seriously? As much as we loved watching John Krasinski shimmy like Tina Turner to “Proud Mary,” we don’t think it holds a candle to Chip and Jo serving up seriously amazing home improvement ideas with some adorably hilarious banter sprinkled in.

As proof of the show’s award-worthiness, consider these highlights from various “Fixer Upper” episodes below.

1. Chip takes it all off (almost)

In “The Floating Fixer Upper,” Chip strips to his skivvies while renovating a boathouse, revealing the answer to a question that only Joanna was privy to earlier: boxers or briefs? (The answer: both—Chip wears boxer briefs.)

2. Joanna goes beyond farmhouse chic

While Joanna is famed for a type of home decor known as farmhouse chic, in “The Pick a Door House,” she steps outside her comfort zone by going modern. And Chip is even more uncomfortable.

“I’m not modern,” Chip confesses. “I don’t even know what modern is.” Thankfully Joanna has a clue, and pulls this style off with ease.

3. Chip and Joanna build a bakery

In the episode “Sweet Surprise at the Silos,” Chip and Jo continue renovations on a 2.5-acre lot they bought in 2014 known as “The Silos.” Having turned the barn on the premises into a home goods store, they turn their attention to the abandoned flower shop where Chip used to buy Joanna flowers back when they were dating. What should go there?

“Hot yoga?” Chip suggests to Joanna. “Laser tag? Batting cage? Cigar bar?”

Nope—a bakery. Joanna promises Chip a “ham sandwich–flavored cuppy cake.” Chip is all in.

4. Chip and Jo meet a football star

Chip flips out in the “Graham House” episode when Cleveland Browns quarterback Robert Griffen III asks the couple to renovate a home for a Vietnam vet as part of Griffen’s charitable organization, the Family of 3 Foundation. Chip happily agrees, gushing in anticipation of meeting his football idol: “Do I hug him? Do I tackle him?” The home ends up a touching salute to those who have served.

5. The couple bare their embarrassing past

In “The Giraffe House,” the couple boldly reveal a home they lived in more than 10 years earlier, offering viewers a peek inside—and an unflinching look at their many renovation blunders. Examples? Leaving popcorn ceiling intact. Painting over wallpaper.

“We made every mistake in the book,” Joanna admits. Oh, they’ve come a long way since then.

6. Chip and Jo see the worst wallpaper ever

Seriously now, Tabasco sauce wallpaper? The couple wisely wipe out the hot sauce.

7. The couple are surprised by a phone call

We’ll never forget “The Mexica Major House” episode when Chip gets a surprise phone call from Kelvin Beachum Jr., star offensive tackle with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He says he’d like to pitch in $100,000 to help his parents, Kelvin and Culetta Beachum, renovate their home. Chip and Jo are touched—and put that money to good use.

8. Chip admits his worst nightmare

Everyone knows Joanna loves shiplap, and Chip loves ribbing her on this obsession. So perhaps it’s no surprise when, in “Space in the Suburbs,” Chip jokingly admits he hasn’t been getting much sleep “ever since I’ve been having those nightmares about shiplap.”

“Those are not nightmares,” Joanna shoots back. “If you’re dreaming about shiplap, that’s a good dream!”

We doubt they’ll ever see eye to eye on this.

9. Joanna goes on a crazy spending spree

The episode “Big Country Farmhouse” features a home bought for $240,000, which is quite a deal. Then Joanna says it will take an extra $300,000 to renovate, admitting it’s their “biggest demo yet.” Chip almost has a heart attack. But wow, does it pay off once you see the after pics.

10. Chip and Jo build a new home for the show’s producer

In the Season 4 finale, the couple build a dream home for their own show’s producer. No pressure, right? Even worse, they pick a run-down shack, somehow transforming this $12,500 hovel into a gorgeous home. And not a moment too soon: Jessie and Michael Matsumoto reveal at the end that they are expecting twins.
