Kicking off a busy off-season of real estate deals in Southern California, tight end Antonio Gates, the eight-time Pro-Bowler with the newly relocated and renamed Los Angeles Chargers, has put his estate in Poway, CA, on the market for $2.5 million.

Gates and his family already have an L.A. pied-à-terre, but that’s on the market as well. They intended to consolidate their holdings in San Diego and sell their newly renovated, 4,428-square-foot Hollywood Hills home. However, with the announcement of the Chargers’ move north to Los Angeles, their plans changed.

“They just put their San Diego home on the market for $2.5 million. Their Hollywood Hills home is still on the market currently for $2.5 million. They plan to sell both homes and buy their forever home in L.A. soon. They’re looking at new homes now,” says a rep for the family.

So why don’t the Gates just keep their L.A. home and live there? After all, they’ve had it since 2014, when they purchased it for $1,660,000. After Gates’ wife, Sasha, completely remodeled the place, their family doubled—and they discovered two babies, a pool, and four stories worth of staircases don’t mix.

The Gates’ Hollywood Hills home is also on the market.

The couple originally listed the Hollywood Hills home last summer for $3 million and it’s had two price reductions since then. If it looks familiar, that’s because it’s been featured on “Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles” and the E! series “WAGS.”

Their San Diego–area estate, located in a tony neighborhood in Poway, is much larger. Built in 2001, the home has five bedrooms and 6.5 baths spread over 6,841 square feet. It was purchased by Gates in 2006 for $2.55 million, and its current price likely reflects the family’s eagerness to move on.

Among its finer features are three kitchens: an outdoor kitchen, an indoor kitchen with a center island, and a kitchen in the guest wing. The master suite has dual walk-in closets, a fireplace, and a spa-like bathroom. On the fully landscaped grounds you’ll find a saltwater pool and spa and a lighted basketball court.

So where will the family settle down? Don’t expect them to wind up close to the stadium. The Chargers will be playing their next two seasons in Carson, at a soccer stadium designed for the L.A. Galaxy. In 2019, they’ll be sharing a brand-new stadium with the Rams in nearby Inglewood.

“Nobody lives near the stadium, because you’re only there about eight times a year,” says former NFL star and current Realtor® Zac Diles of Rodeo Realty in Studio City.

Diles adds that players who want to put down L.A. roots will pick upscale neighborhoods close to training facilities and organization headquarters, where they spend the bulk of their time.
