Lovingly Restored Santa Monica Mid-Century Modern on Market for .3M

You want authentic? We’ll show you authentic! This Mid-Century Modern home in Santa Monica, CA, was built in 1959. In 2015, the original owner sold it to architecture aficionados who have since restored the home, while keeping much of the vintage design intact.

Professional responsibilities require the current owners to move on, so now they’re offering it to buyers for $4.3 million.

“It has a strong vintage feel, but it has a very open flow with natural light that every generation appreciates,” says listing agent Allison Gold of Compass. “It’s a great entertaining house, both inside and out, yet a wonderful family home as well.”

In fact, the renovation work is so tiptop it was recently featured in Domino magazine. It helps that the current owner is responsible for the makeover: Fashion stylist-turned-interior designer Jessica Hansen has a personal mantra of “saving the special.”

And she went to great lengths to do just that in this four-bedroom, three-bath, 2,920-square-foot home. The original wood paneling has been expertly restored. The unique stair rail has been slightly updated. And the gold-veined mirrors in the master bedroom? Yup—they’ve been there since the beginning, and Gold reports Hansen would be happy to keep them if the buyers don’t see them as the right fit.

New to the home are the wide-plank oak flooring, treated with lye to achieve a whitewashed effect. The wood and custom tile replaced wall-to-wall carpeting that was used throughout the house—including the bathrooms.

The old kitchen was gutted so the owner could open up the space. Whitewashed plywood cabinets were installed, bridging the gap between modern and vintage styles. The backsplash is made of unique geometric tile that Hansen designed for the space.

Then there’s the quaint wood structure with a loft bed out back, which is also new. Some call it a studio, but it could also be a she shed, office, or adult playhouse—whatever strikes a buyer’s fancy.

Gold notes that the location is one of the most convenient in the Los Angeles area. Situated on Franklin Hill (the last street before Santa Monica becomes West Los Angeles), the house offers both city and ocean views.

It’s located within walking distance to the chic shops and restaurants on Montana, the Farmers Market in Brentwood, and the business hubs on Wilshire Boulevard. It would be entirely possible to park your car in the double garage and not take it out for days—which is extremely unusual for Los Angeles.

Potential buyers would be advised to heed one warning, however: Don’t fall too much in love with the perfectly curated furnishings.

“We have a saying in real estate that ‘everything is negotiable,’” Gold says with a laugh. But many of the perfect pieces in the house are family heirlooms or painstakingly sourced vintage finds. New owners will likely be better off filling the space with their own treasures.
