A modern architectural marvel has landed on the market in ultra-exclusive Atherton, CA, for $29.8 million. Completed in 2017, the concrete, glass, and steel structure was designed by the renowned San Francisco-based architect Stanley Saitowitz of Natoma Architects.

The clever creation is composed of two “L”-shaped forms that balance on top of each other around a courtyard. The resulting building creates bridges and cantilevered overhangs, each spanning 23 feet.

“The form derives from the site,” Saitowitz says, “It protects the interiors from the hilltop cul-de-sac, frames the views, defines and bounds interiors, and establishes outdoor living spaces.”

Perched on 1.63 acres, with views of the San Francisco Bay Area, the street-facing front of the home is mostly solid concrete. The walls facing the private back of the massive compound are glass.

The sleek, three-level, 13,849-square-foot interior space contains concrete walls and ceilings, radiant-heated hardwood floors, Arclinea Italian cabinetry, and custom-made chandeliers from Milan.

The show-stopping space includes six bedrooms, four full bathrooms, plus three half-baths. The master bedroom is situated in the overhanging wing, with a front-row seat on the Bay views. The balcony has a wall that slides away, allowing the room to become open to the surroundings.

The white kitchen, at the center of the open living space, is adjacent to a casual dining area. There’s also a formal dining room, a cantilevered living space with a terrace, walls of glass, and a fireplace, and a family room with pool terrace access. The lower level includes a home theater, rec room, and gym.

“My favorite aspect of the property is how the building folds and unfolds, threading and weaving itself, blending insides and outsides into a seamless whole,” Saitowitz says. To hear the architect describe his design, watch this video:

Outside are landscaped grounds, a barbecue area, fire pit, bocce ball court, pool, spa, poolhouse with 1.5 baths and kitchen, and a studio with bath and kitchen.

Along with a large patio area are numerous oaks and imported 100-year-old olive trees. The fully automated home includes solar panels, a four-car garage, and electric car-charging stations.

The question remains, who will lay down the $30 million to move into the house, which was built by a developer? While that’s a lot of money, keep in mind, Atherton was rated the most expensive ZIP code in the country in 2017 by Forbes.

Both Google’s Eric Schmidt and Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg call Atherton home. With tech titans sizing up the architecture as the potential buyers, it’s not surprising that Saitowitz has compared the design to an iPhone, which he calls “a remarkable yet discreet instrument which facilitates enormous opportunities for … use.”

“In the same way,” he says, “this house is an instrument that sets the occupants free to occupy the landscape with the minimum constraints and clutter of an object.”

And a pricey object at that.

The listing is represented by Mary and Brent Gullixson of Alain Pinel Realtors.
