A rocky ridge overlooking the coast in Northern California is a fount of inspiration for creative types. So it isn’t a surprise that photographer Greg Gorman saw the land he purchased in Albion, CA, in 1997 as an ideal home site.

The result? The eye-popping Edge House—named for its perch over the Pacific Ocean—which is now on the market for $2.9 million.

“It almost feels like you’re in a helm of a ship,” says listing agent Sarah Schoeneman. “It’s just spectacular.”

The woodsy and rustic coast, along with water views on three sides, evokes the feeling of being at sea. The 2.41-acre spot “almost has a compound feel” to it, the agent notes. The home, which fits beautifully into its surroundings, was featured in “California Interiors,” published by Taschen Books.

The home was constructed with reclaimed redwood, including timbers, paneling, and decking. Designed and built by Richard Fienburgh, the home features interiors with deeply waxed reclaimed Douglas fir. Parts of the studio were made from an old barn from nearby Windsor.

The 1,600-square-foot main house has one bedroom and one bath. A separate studio contains a gym, wine cellar, lofted bed, wet bar, and full bath. The studio could be transformed into a guesthouse or office by the next owner. There’s also a separate sauna complete with sound system, and an outdoor shower. An additional 240-square-foot cabin with skylights is also part of the property.

The main house features a living space anchored by a stone fireplace. The chef’s kitchen has copper counters, and copper inlay also shows up on the door, gutters, and trim. Radiant heating in the stone flooring warms up the space. Furnishings excluding the artwork are included in the sale price.

But the greatest piece of art is the natural landscape surrounding the home.

“I find the solace of being in such an inspirational environment, that my creative juices are constantly flowing and I enjoy writing and coming up with new projects that living in the city doesn’t afford me,” says Gorman, who has photographed Hollywood stars for magazines such as GQ, Rolling Stone, and Vanity Fair.

Outside, wood decking wraps the home and hiking trails afford northern and southern vistas. The trail at the end of the peninsula leads to a handcrafted bench overlooking the water.

“I love the beautiful daylight shooting and living space the best,” Gorman says. “However, nothing beats sitting in my living room at sunset over a glass of wine.”

Just 5 miles south of Mendocino, the home is near an airport where private jets can land.

The area draws a crowd for the Mendocino film festival, and wine buffs will enjoy the nearby vineyards of Anderson Valley.

“I’ve always loved the north coast of California, but what makes the Mendocino locale so special is that it is just far enough off the beaten track that it maintains its charm and allure,” says Gorman.
