Now that Oprah has purchased a beautiful retreat in Washington’s San Juan Islands perhaps it’s a good time for rock icon Steve Miller to sell his lavish estate in the same archipelago.

Originally priced at $18 million, Miller’s estate has been on and off the market for almost four years. It’s now priced to sell at $12.9 million.

“It’s one of the most beautiful properties I’ve ever seen,” says Dan Gottesman, who is co-listing the compound with Sam Chapin. “The woodwork alone, handcrafted by local artisans, is a whole ‘nother level.”

There are other grand estates in the archipelago, but it’s safe to say there isn’t another compound like Miller’s 39-acre retreat. Perhaps the lack of comparable homes is a reason why it’s still available.

The property is ideal for someone, especially a musician, who wants to get away from it all and focus on their art. Blasted out of rock, the 11,000-square-foot main residence has off-grid capabilities for up to a year, Gottesman says.

The estate is a 40-minute seaplane ride from Seattle, and the island of San Juan—where the estate is—is the most accessible in the entire chain, according to Gottesman.

And although it’s remote, this 400-island chain is in a state with no income tax, making the estate even more appealing to a successful creative type or a tech titan.

The estate’s acreage includes hiking trails and views of Friday Harbor, Zen gardens, a Japanese-style teahouse, plus a manicured horse pasture. The property also comes with 300 feet of water frontage and a deep-water dock that can accommodate three yachts.

The main house has three bedrooms and four baths. The basement is currently set up as a recording studio, but could easily be transformed into additional bedrooms or offices.

In addition to the main house, there are eight separate structures on the property, including a barn, shop, greenhouse, and caretaker’s accommodations.

“It could be a vacation home, a full-time residence, a corporate retreat. … There are so many uses for it,” says Gottesman. He adds that Miller loved the home but had the opportunity to spend only about six months there before divorce precipitated the sale. Miller’s also parting with a slightly similar property in Ketchum, ID, which is on the market for $16 million.

Miller began his career playing blues and rock with the likes of Les PaulMuddy Waters, and Boz Scaggs. From the mid-1970s through the early 1980s, he and the Steve Miller Band recorded a series of chart-topping hits, including “Fly Like an Eagle,” “Rock’n Me,” “Take the Money and Run,” “The Joker,” and “Jungle Love.” Miller was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.
