At M, ‘Bucolic’ NYC Penthouse With 5 Terraces Is Most Expensive New Listing

A New York City penthouse with the feel of a charming country cottage just landed on the market for $58 million. That’s a significant $7 million reduction from its 2017 price, but it still ranks as this week’s most expensive new listing.

It’s located in the former Stanhope Hotel, a 1926 Rosario Candela–designed building on the Upper East Side, which was converted to 139 condos in 2005.

After divorcing her husband, the late Bruce Wasserstein, the French-born Claude Wasserstein purchased the unit in “white box condition” in 2008 for $34.8 million, according to the Real Deal. The raw space was then transformed into a “rooftop playhouse,” according to Vogue in 2011.

The six-bedroom, 6.5-bath unit measures 7,067 square feet and comes with “spectacular terraces” and “epic” city views. The sun-filled residence features spectacular, gardenlike terraces designed by landscape architect Madison Cox. 

The expansive space overlooks Central Park and features 10-foot-high ceilings.

“The overall feeling throughout the residence is pastoral and bucolic, and the views of the park seamlessly merge into the vistas from the two very large, west-facing terraces,” the listing notes.

Totaling 4,817 square feet of exterior space (larger than many New York City apartments), the five wraparound terraces are filled with planters, artificial turf, as well as dining and lounge spaces.

Inside, the living room features walls of glass. The dining room includes a wood-burning fireplace and a breakfast niche “that appears to cantilever out over the terrace.” The space also features a cozy library, and upstairs there’s a study that opens to a terrace. 

The bedroom suites come with French doors and views of the terraces with “arched allees, vine-clad trellises, and verdant plantings.” 

Even the chef’s kitchen benefits from the outdoor space, with an adjacent terrace, vegetable garden, and grill. 

The building provides residents with white-glove service, and amenities such as a gym and spa.
