Classic ‘L.A. Confidential’ House Offers Oodles of Old Hollywood Glamour

We’ve seen a number of homes that have major roles in notable films, but few are so immediately recognizable as the Spanish Colonial mansion from “L.A. Confidential.”

It’s where the notorious Veronica Lake look-alike Lynn Bracken (played by Kim Basinger) greeted gentleman callers. Now the iconic residence can be yours for $3.5 million.

It’s the first time on the market in 67 years for the 4,600-square-foot, two-story home, which was built in 1923 by Hollywood bon vivant architect Jack Donovan. The current owners rented out the place for years, and after a tenant recently moved out, they decided to put the place up for sale.

“The beautiful character and detail of this Spanish Colonial home have been incredibly well-preserved—from the original oversized wooden front door, the ornate fireplace, dramatic curves and arches, courtyards and patios, to the separate his-and-hers poolside changing rooms. This home is one of the best original examples of this wonderful architectural style still in existence in Los Angeles today,” says listing agent Susanna Nagy of Keller Williams Realty.

The home is located in an area of Los Angeles still brimming with the neo-noir style of the early 20th century. It sits on a large 17,000-square-foot lot, with the Wilshire Country Club bordering it on two sides.

The property sits alongside a number of classic homes from the same era, and all are situated in a Hancock Park historical zone, which prohibits changes to the exterior of the home. These restrictions also applied to “Property Brothers” star Drew Scott‘s honeymoon house, which is also in the vicinity.

As a result, the home will forever maintain its stately exterior features. And it’s one of the few area residences that haven’t been overly modified on the interior.

There’s no mistaking the red front door, around which Basinger’s character often peeked, and the living room behind it, with its massive fireplace, wood floor, archways, windows, and wrought-iron railing on the gallery above.

The master suite with a balcony as well as the dining room with a chandelier also retain the glamour of the old Hollywood era.

The long, rectangular pool—a style that’s come back into vogue—makes you feel as if you’re sunning like the stars of yesteryear.

Sipping cocktails on the adjacent covered patio, one of the original “California rooms,” also conveys the gracious feeling of old Hollywood glamor.

However, the kitchen and bathrooms aren’t quite as charming, and Nagy acknowledges that they’ll need some work. The agent says it’s a tremendous opportunity to customize the spaces to fit in with the rest of the historic home.

There are five bedrooms, including an in-law apartment located above the garage. It comes with its own rooftop deck.

There’s another bonus space in the basement, which isn’t included in the square footage. It was once a wine cellar.

“When you are in this magnificent home, you get a feeling, even if only for a moment, as to what it must have been like in Hollywood’s golden age,” Nagy says.
