Cool Milwaukee Mansion From 1896 Is This Week’s Most Popular Listing

realtor.com

We’re going old-school this week. A throwback to Old World craftsmanship in Milwaukee topped the list of most-clicked properties on realtor.com®. Listed for $1.7 million and known as the Goldberg Mansion, the French/Gothic-inspired residence was fully restored in the 1980s by the current owners, who have kept it in pristine condition.

We were entranced by the massive stained-glass window, the cathedral ceilings, and the hand-carved wood detailing. It’s pretty clear that vintage home lovers also swooned for the place, driving a ton of traffic this week.

The runner-up spot this week is also an older home—but that’s where the similarities end. Built in 1920, this North Carolina mansion gives off a distinctly Dickensian vibe. Many original details are still intact, but the place needs a buyer to rescue it from its deteriorating condition. The end result could be rewarding, but it’s far from a turnkey opportunity. Better get ready to roll up your sleeves on this one.

Besides those old-timers—and three other fascinating abodes of more than a century old—we recommend checking out a Hawaii home designed to meld with its surroundings, a “shome” in Wyoming, and a former mill transformed into a grand home in Indiana.

10. 4039 Lower Honoapiilani Rd, Lahaina, HI

Price: $11,500,000
Why it’s here: This gated, oceanfront property “cultivates a rare sense of privacy and tranquility.” The plantation-style layout includes 5,400 square feet of luscious living space on Maui. Built in 1997, the tropical retreat has undergone a complete renovation, and boasts indoor-outdoor spaces that open out to the private beach and pool.

9. 914 8th Ave, Beaver Falls, PA

Price: $49,900
Why it’s here: If Jay Gatsby’s house had fallen into deep disrepair, it might have wound up looking like this. Known as the 1910 Moltrup Steel Mansion, it’s now being auctioned off to the highest bidder. The interiors need heavy restoration to return to the place to its former glory. However, some original details remain intact, including intricate woodwork, crown moldings, stained glass, and a split staircase.

8. 1219 Road 146, Burns, WY

Price: $299,900
Why it’s here: It’s Wyoming’s answer to the barndominium—a combination of shed and home. In this case, the structure is being fancifully dubbed a “shome.” (Good luck making that one catch on!) As with barndominiums, the residence is built inside a metal structure with access to agricultural and workshop buildings. The four-bedroom residence features a gourmet kitchen, and there’s a separate tiny home on the 40 acres.

7. 9271 S 225 E, Flat Rock, IN

Price: $699,000
Why it’s here: For horse lovers! Originally built as a mill in 1861, the structure was made into an almost 5,000-square-foot home in 1950. Since then, the four-bedroom home has been upgraded, and features a grand foyer, great room, and library. A two-story barn also sits on the 18-acre property.

6. 4896 Kahekili Hwy, Wailuku, HI

Price: $2,400,000
Why it’s here: The web clicked like crazy after we featured this inspired dwelling last week! The modern, yet organic, structure, built in 2006, uses “not a drop of paint” but instead is made up of ipe wood, concrete, and glass. The flowing wood roof mirrors Maui’s mountainous landscape and ocean below. There are floor-to-ceiling windows everywhere, making it easy to survey the nearly 3 acres.

3. 1572 Lauderdale Ave, Lakewood, OH

Price: $178,500
Why it’s here: While in need of some modernization, this charming home’s location is the key. It’s convenient to the downtown area. The 1,700-square-foot Colonial also includes a large covered porch, eat-in kitchen, living room, and family room.

2. 1 Fairmont Rd, Asheville, NC

Price: $374,000
Why it’s here: Bring your hammer! Built in 1920, this historic home has major potential, but is in need of a major rehab. If you like a challenge, we’d love to see the end result of this home’s extreme makeover.

Ashville, NC

1. 2727 E Newberry Blvd, Milwaukee, WI

Price: $1,695,000
Why it’s here: The Goldberg Mansion, with its gables, finials, and turrets, dates back to 1896 and has been kept in pristine condition after a major restoration in the 1980s.

Stunning original details include a wall of stained-glass windows, detailed carved hardwood floors, and a hand-carved staircase. There’s also a chef’s kitchen, three bedrooms, including a master bedroom with clawfoot tub, and a third-floor “ballroom.”

A two-bedroom coach house comes rented. “It’s artisan craftsmanship throughout the house,” says listing agent Scott Campbell. “The current owners kept it in the same era. It has a lot of nice detail and a feeling of grandeur that was in that era. It’s something that you just don’t find.”
