Back before celebrity chefs sliced and diced their way into perpetual Food Network employment, Graham Kerr was pioneering home cooking TV for the masses.

Now 85, the veteran chef known as the “Galloping Gourmet,” is still cooking up a storm in Mount Vernon, WA. The latest dish he’s plated up is his haute modern home, now on the market for $722,000.

Kerr designed the two-bedroom, 2.5-bath home himself, inspired by a 71-foot racing yacht. Nautical features in the custom-designed residence include portholes, shiplap, and teak rails and decks. Even the bathrooms have a nautical design.

The 1,718-square-foot home was built in 2000 and sits on an acre lot. Kerr put emphasis on efficiency and conservation, installing bamboo flooring throughout and a greenhouse and organic gardens out back.

Of course, attention must be paid to the home’s kitchen. Efficiently designed with maple cabinetry and stainless-steel tiles, it has a bit of a ship’s galley feel to it, although it’s far more spacious.

There’s a lovely built-in breakfast booth adjacent to it, designed in a style that can be described as yachtlike.

Many elements of Kerr’s one-of-a-kind home have been featured on TV and in magazines, but we’re particularly enamored with the home’s rooftop office/studio. Surrounded by a deck, the space offers unparalleled views of the mountains, water, and San Juan Islands.

Kerr, originally from England, has been an international culinary expert since the late 1950s, hosting shows including “The Galloping Gourmet,” “The Graham Kerr Show,” and “The Gathering Place.” He’s written more than 30 cookbooks and is currently working on another book.
