San Francisco 49ers legend Joe Montana is once again trying to pass along his trophy estate in Napa Valley. Originally on the market for—wait for it—$49 million in 2009, Montana and his wife, Jennifer, slashed the price of the property in 2011 to $35 million.

The couple now appears ready to part with the equestrian property on 500 acres for $28.9 million.

Here are six facts about the storied estate of one of the NFL’s greatest players.

1. European-inspired design

The Montanas found inspiration for the custom-built home, which is dubbed the Villa Montana, on their travels to Italy and France. Many of the contents of the compound, such as the furniture, statuary, and landscape decor, were imported from the Old World.

Completed in 2003, the 9,700-square-foot space took five years to build, and includes three bedrooms, three ensuite bathrooms, and one powder room. Much has been imported from Europe, including antique marble floors, fireplaces, ironwork torchieres, mantels, 16th-century iron gates, and a 17th-century church altar surround.

2. Frescoes aplenty

One-of-a kind features include turreted towers with views of Mount St. Helena, wood-beamed and vaulted ceilings, and frescoes, including one designed by the family that features the Montana family crest.

And, ooh-a-la, a Parisian marble bathtub from the Montanas’ Atherton, CA, house was relocated to this vacation home and set in place with the help of a crane.

3. A taste of the wine country

Of course, the wine country property comes with an enormous wine cellar, which holds 3,500 bottles. In addition, an outdoor terrace surrounded by grapevines provides a picturesque outdoor area for sipping your vino.

The cellar also stores bottled olive oil, from the 30 to 60 gallons of oil produced annually from the Tuscan olive varietals planted on the property by the Montanas.

For alfresco dining, there’s also an outdoor kitchen with a Tuscan grill, pizza oven, and wine fridge.

4. Guarded by a moat

The property is just about an hour north of San Francisco, and you may feel transported to another world. The feeling begins as soon as you approach. A 17th-century stone well marks a pathway to a bridge over a moat that leads visitors to the home’s entry.

The elaborate landscaping surrounding the home includes ancient Tuscan varietal olive trees, fully grown cypress trees, rose gardens, and vines of white table grapes.

5. Baller amenities abound

Naturally, there are plenty of activities besides consuming Cabernet. Along with a pool and gym, there’s a sport court, a skeet-shooting range, a pond, and a regulation bocce ball court. Alternatively, you can grab your canoe and paddle down two streams. In addition to riding trails and stables, the large equestrian facility also comes with an arena.

The property includes a guesthouse with two beds, one bath, and an outdoor spa. A caretaker’s two-bed, two-bath cottage also comes with the sale.

6. San Francisco-bound

So why leave paradise? According to a press statement provided by Terri Tiffany, the Montanas are listing the estate because their grown children are starting their careers away from home, so the family spends less time there.

Now done with his glorious NFL career, the 63-year-old former quarterback and Super Bowl champion has moved to San Francisco with his wife, where he invests in early-stage startups though his venture-capital firm, Liquid 2 Ventures.

Tiffany also notes that when the couple initially listed the property in 2009, they took it off the market soon after, because their four children (now aged from 27 to 33) begged them to keep it for a few more years. The listing did receive offers, but the Montanas decided not to sell at that time. Now, any buyers still interested could snap it up at a discount.

Avram Goldman and Tim Hayden of Compass hold the listing.
