Music Maestro Glen Ballard Changes Tune on Price of Malibu Cottage

Pop music producer and songwriter Glen Ballard has yet to strike a chord with the perfect buyer for his whimsical waterfront cottage in Malibu, CA. So he’s singing a different tune—reducing the price on the place from $7,995,000 to $7,250,000.

The two-bedroom, two-bath beach house with a storybook turret has served as a getaway for many a celebrity. Ballard has produced records for Katy Perry, Annie Lennox, Barbra Streisand, and more, so it’s easy to imagine an outsize number of A-listers have roamed these halls.

Ballard bought the home on Malibu’s La Costa Beach in 1993, paying $1,100,000 for the 1,100-square-foot dwelling. Built around 1930, his home is one of the few remaining original homes on the beach, he says.

Prized for its proximity to Santa Monica, La Costa Beach is also noted for its privacy.

“The beach can only be accessed from the residences and there is no way for the public to find their way there, except at the lowest tides,” wrote Ballard in a feature on his property. “So this really does represent the only ‘private’ beach in L.A.”

From the home’s street entry on busy Pacific Coast Highway, all you’ll see is a vine-covered wall with a discreet sliding gate. Directly behind that is a garage and a brick-paved courtyard, additional barriers between the highway and the residence.

Ballard updated the place, but was careful to preserve the home’s original charm. It now gleams white and bright, with light wood floors and the original arched brick fireplace painted white.

Modern French doors in the living room open to a clever wrap-around deck with a daring, upholstered sunbathing shelf with a hammock slung underneath. There’s nothing but sand between that deck and the surf.

Perhaps the home’s most distinctive feature is the turret with windows that overlook 40 feet of waterfront. Within the turret is a dining nook, with a fitting line etched from William Butler Yeats’ poem “The Lake Isle of Innisfree.”

Ballard, 66, says he’s gained plenty of inspiration while staying in the cottage.

“As a writer, it’s the ultimate place to gather your thoughts,” Ballard told the Wall Street Journal.

Ballard is best known for producing and co-writing Alanis Morissette’s “Jagged Little Pill” album, for which he won four of his six Grammys.
