The first time listing agent April Redford entered this six-bedroom, 5,000-square-foot midcentury modern masterpiece located just outside Branson, MO, she was just a kid—a kid left in awe.

“I remember walking into the house when I was 16 or 17. You walk into the entrance, and it has this slate tile and the big staircase, and I’d never seen anything like it,” she says.

The impeccably curated $1.4 million hunting lodge was built by one of the founders of Steak ‘n Shake, the grandparents of Redford’s childhood friend. After the death of the company’s founder, Gus Belt (whose picture still hangs in the hallway), his wife, Edith, built the abode as a marvelous retreat.

“Everything was perfect, and everything matched,” says Redford. And the new buyers can enjoy midcentury modern perfection, too—with a few carefully updated amenities. The remodeled kitchen is the only bit of 21st century that’s crept into the house. The rest feels like a ’60s-era time capsule.

Colored glass panes tower above the wooden entry, adding a hint of vintage cool to the two-story foyer. An open layout makes the home feel huge: Once you enter the space, you’ll pass beneath a suspended second-floor walkway and around a towering rock fireplace—the same one that wowed a teenage Redford.

And there is, of course, wood paneling galore (and please don’t paint it!). It stretches the length of the two-story living room and functions as antique wainscoting in several of the bedrooms.

Bringing this beauty into the modern era may require a little sweat: The hardwood floors need refinishing, and the now-empty indoor pool deserves a chic update. With just a little work, this retro floor plan could transform into a space worthy of its founding mother.

Redford “went through piles of vintage pictures” when she started working with the house. “Pictures of ladies playing games and men coming in with their catches.”

Despite the stunning interior, buyers won’t want to forget the home’s primary purpose: as a hunting lodge. The 200 surrounding acres provide plenty of space for recreational pursuits, whether you like to hunt, fish, or hike.

“The land lays very nicely,” says Redford. The property features a pond and gorgeous views of the surrounding hillside. And, of course, the star of the show: a pristine midcentury modern home unmatched by anything else nearby.

“It’s not at all a common style here,” says Redford. “We don’t have anything like this in the area.”

The home is perfectly suited to a family in need of a luxe escape—but entrepreneurial buyers may find other uses for the land.

“I’ve thought it would be a really cool bed-and-breakfast,” says Redford, “or a wedding venue.”

With the acres surrounding the home, there’s plenty of room to build more small, secluded cabins for guests to hide away in. Your imagination is your limit—and if you need inspiration (or just a bit of fun), the bright lights of Branson are just a short drive away.
