Iconic Grey Gardens in East Hampton Sells, Estate Sale Coming Up

Writer Sally Quinn has found a buyer for Grey Gardens. The iconic East Hampton, NY, home went on the market in February for $20 million.
Quinn and Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee bought the home from the Beale family in 1979 for $220,000 and totally renovated the estate. But after Bradlee’s death in 2014, Quinn couldn’t bear to be at the 6,000-square-foot house without him.
She proceeded to put it on the market for an optimistic $20 million, then cut $2 million from the price. The famous home has also been available as a rental for wealthy summer denizens.
“I’m happy now, but when I first got the offer, I just burst into tears,” Quinn told the Washington Post. “Because it means letting go of Ben and all the magical times we spent there.”
The 1897-built estate includes a stucco cottage, heated pool, and tennis court. The house was for sale with all its furnishings, which the new owners reportedly don’t want. So Quinn is planning an estate sale this week, which will include some mementos from the home’s former residents, Edith Bouvier Beale and her daughter, Edith Beale, also known as Big Edie and Little Edie.
Grey Gardens was the subject of a 1976 documentary that explored the daily lives of the once-upper class Edies, who fell into poverty and rarely left the Long Island mansion, which became inhabited by numerous cats and raccoons.
