Is This the Most Instagrammable Home? M Bixby House Has Unparalleled Views

San Francisco has the legendary Golden Gate Bridge. Those who traipse farther south on the Pacific Coast Highway will eventually come upon the Bixby Bridge. The subject of over 100,000 Instagram posts, the bridge is one of the most photographed in the world.

But if you can tear your gaze away from the iconic concrete span, you may notice a lone house just adjacent to the road.

Known as the Bixby house, the one-of-a-kind residence about 12 miles south of Carmel is now on the market for $16 million.

“Once you pull off the highway, you’re on the property. You have absolutely no neighbors,” says listing agent Steve Beutel. “It’s almost like an island.”

Surrounded by mountains and water and perched on a peninsula, the cliffside jewel box has remained fairly untouched since its current owners purchased it for $7.2 million in 2000. They used the home as a retreat, Beutel says.

“It’s a funky home,” says Beutel. “They fell in love with it and bought it.” While the owners have kept the place in ideal condition, they haven’t made any significant upgrades. And there’s absolutely no way to improve the home’s location.

The 1960 home was purchased by “Candid Camera” creator and host Allen Funt in the 1970s. After his death in 1999, at the age of 84, the home was sold to a developer. A year later, the current owners picked up the property, along with its 11 acres on the west side of California’s most famous highway.

“This is probably the best property down there,” Beutel says. “It’s the most private. It’s got the biggest lot on the water. And then when you’re in the house and have the view of Bixby Bridge … you don’t see that every day.”

We might say that’s the understatement of the year. The views are unparalleled and will inspire envy in anyone who lives their life for the ‘Gram.

Measuring 5,200 square feet, the home has five bedrooms and six bathrooms. The property includes a rustic guesthouse that was built in the 1800s and shipped from the East Coast through the Panama Canal in the 1960s to its current spot.

Other unusual elements include stained-glass windows and an eye-popping mosaic-tiled bathroom, both installed by Funt. Walls of glass throughout the home take advantage of the water and bridge vistas.

On the grounds, you’ll find paths with breathtaking ocean views, a deck, and an outdoor dining area. Artwork by the late Monterey sculptor Gordon Newell can be found among a grove of cypress trees.

Adding to the mystique of the home, California poet Robinson Jeffers was said to have lived on the property for a time, undoubtedly inspired by the natural setting.

The bridge itself is currently basking in Hollywood glory, thanks to the opening credits of the HBO series “Big Little Lies.” And we won’t lie when we say the Bixby house is one of the most interesting opportunities we’ve ever seen. Now, about that $16 million…
