Big Unit, Big Discount! Randy Johnson Finally Sells Mansion for .3M

Baseball Hall of Famer Randy Johnson has finally scored in real estate. After more than four years, three price cuts, and one auction, “The Big Unit” has sold his Paradise Valley, AZ, home to the highest bidder, for $7.3 million, AZ Central reported. 

The massive 25,416-square foot Mediterranean estate on 5 acres had originally listed for $25 million in 2014.

Given the $18 million drop from the asking price of five years ago, “The buyer ended up getting a fantastic deal,” says listing agent Robert Joffe. The agent told us the buyer had already seen the home several times, but the auction forces “activity and urgency.”

Concierge Auctions, a luxury real estate auction house, facilitated the bidding process. Qualified bidders were required to show proof of funds, and were obliged to deposit $100,000 into a third-party escrow account. Bidding opened on Jan. 29, and the property was sold to the highest bidder on Jan. 31.

Most recently listed for $14.5 million, the home was gaveled at a steep discount. However, Joffe said the result was in line with what the auction house told the Johnsons to expect. “There were no surprises, and no disappointments. The Johnsons were happy, and I’m happy,” Joffe says.

We imagine the buyer of the resort-style retreat is also feeling pretty darn good. The luxury estate is a true winner.

Built in 2006, the massive mansion was designed by Erik Peterson of Phoenix Architecture. The layout features seven bedrooms, 12 baths, a detached two-bedroom guesthouse, a separate 1,800-square-foot fitness center, pool, outdoor kitchen, a tennis court, and a dog run. 

Architectural flourishes include wrought-iron details, stone walls, and ornate accents, such as detailed ceiling work, dark-wood built-ins, and multiple fireplaces throughout the home. Along with a chef’s kitchen and casual dining area, the layout features formal dining and living rooms. The lovely master suite includes a sitting area and private patio.

A fun lower level boasts a private theater with tiered seating, game room with wet bar, recording studio, instrument showroom, a wine room, and a poker room. 

Other amenities include a three-car garage, a pet suite, and security and home automation systems. 

Johnson, 55, pitched in the big leagues for 22 seasons, and ranks second all-time in strikeouts, with 4,875. Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2015, he was also the World Series MVP in 2001 and a 10-time All Star.
