What a Year for Chip and Joanna Gaines! 2018’s Biggest Highlights (Did You Catch Them All?)
What a Year for Chip and Joanna Gaines! 2018’s Biggest Highlights (Did You Catch Them All?)
Chip and Joanna Gaines may have aired the finale of “Fixer Upper” this year, but that doesn’t mean they quietly faded off into the Texas sunset. In fact, 2018 may have just have turned out to be their biggest year yet!
Seriously, real estate reality TV’s favorite couple was popping up in the news left and right for all kinds of reasons—new books, new babies, new products, new headquarters. Lest you forgot just how busy this duo has been this year, here’s a trip down memory lane to 2018’s biggest milestones for Chip and Jo.
February: The Gaineses open their first eatery
One of our favorite episodes from the fifth season of “Fixer Upper” was the one in which Chip and Joanna renovated a roadside diner into their gorgeously designed family restaurant Magnolia Table. And now the place is open for business in Waco! There, you can chow down on family favorite dishes like Jo’s fab buttermilk biscuits and lemon lavender donut holes. And (of course!) there’s a gift shop, where you can buy items both edible and otherwise and a slew of modern farmhouse home decor.
April: ‘Fixer Upper’ airs its last episode
Many of us teared up at the season five finale of “Fixer Upper” for good reason: It’s the last new episode slated to air, ever. “It is with both sadness and expectation that we share the news that season 5 of ‘Fixer Upper’ will be our last,” they announced earlier in a blog post explaining their decision. “We are confident that this is the right choice for us, it has for sure not been an easy one to come to terms with. Our family has grown up alongside yours, and we have felt you rooting us on from the other side of the screen.” It seemed they were going out just the way they came in, with warmth and love. And lots of publicity.
April: Joanna’s ‘Behind the Design’ show premieres
So that we wouldn’t have to go through even the slightest bit of Joanna withdrawal, her new show, “Behind the Design” premiered the week after “Fixer Upper” ended. In each episode, she took us behind the scenes of each house that the couple renovated in season five, and we not only learned all sorts of interesting design tips, but also got interesting insider details on how the house came together. Milk it, girl!
April: Joanna comes out with her first cookbook
Chip always seems to be munching on something, and since Joanna is often busy in the kitchen whipping things up, the noted comfort foodie released her first cookbook, “Magnolia Table: A Collection of Recipes for Gathering.” It’s filled with recipes inspired by dozens of Gaines family favorites. Now we can make her signature chicken pot pies, chocolate chip cookies, and, yep, Chip’s favorite, mac and cheese.
June: Joanna gives birth to baby No. 5
Baby Crew‘s addition to the Gaines, um, crew was announced on June 23, along with news that he arrived two weeks early, but was healthy as could be. Not surprisingly, he inspired a new nursery line at Magnolia Market. That kid must have the most gorgeous, chic-est farmhouse room ever! As a matter of fact, they’re having so much fun, they already hinted that they’re contemplating yet another new line in the growing Magnolia empire: Baby No. 6!
September: Chip and Joanna buy their own HQ2
It seems the Gaines’ Magnolia empire is growing so fast that its multiple properties around Waco can no longer hold it. Even the Silos can’t contain their vast enterprise (although Chip told the Waco Tribune-Herald he’s planning on putting a guy-oriented store actually inside one of those silos.) So they purchased a $1.1 million, three-story building in downtown Waco, where the Magnolia nerve center and business offices will be located. Chip said he’s not exactly sure how they’re going to fix it up yet, but we’re sure they’ll share details once they do.
November: Joanna releases her design book
Several years in the making, Joanna finally released another book, “Homebody: A Guide to Creating Spaces You Never Want to Leave.” The book walks you through how to create a home that reflects the personalities and stories of the people who live there. She uses examples from her own farmhouse, as well as a range of other homes she’s designed. And there are plenty of photos to help you through. Shiplap, anyone?
November: Chip and Joanna announce their own TV network
And wouldn’t you know, they closed the year with an extraordinarily big finish.
On “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” Chip announced to his mom (and the world) that they were planning to return to TV in a big way, and later, Magnolia spokesman John Marsicano clarified what’s up.
“We’re excited to share that we are currently in the early stages of talking with Discovery about a lifestyle-focused media network for Magnolia,” he said. “The details surrounding this opportunity remain a work in progress, but together, our hope is to build a different kind of platform for unique, inspiring, and family-friendly content.” (Discovery recently purchased HGTV’s parent company, in case you were wondering if there was a connection.)
We knew their hiatus from television wouldn’t last long!
