Move over, Mar-a-Lago. Long before President Donald Trump made his winter White House in Palm Beach, FL, commander in chief Chester A. Arthur had a summer White House in Sag Harbor, NY.

Built in 1796, the historic home is now on the market for $13.5 million. Arthur, who was president from 1881 to 1885, often retreated to the home to get away from Washington DC.

The three-story Greek revival, conveniently close to restaurants and the water, has gone through a full renovation by architect Steven Gambrel.

The home last changed hands in 2014 for $3.5 million and is owned by Anke Beck Friedrich and fashion tycoon Jürgen Friedrich, who founded the clothing chain Esprit’s European operations. The redone home first went on the market for $14.2 million in 2016, and has since been relisted at the lower price.

“I just love this property,” says listing agent Rima Mardoyan Smyth of Douglas Elliman. “It was also previously owned by Guinness heiress Lady Caroline Blackwood before Anke and Jürgen bought it, so it’s got quite the provenance.”

When the Friedrichs bought the home, it was in disrepair, says Smyth. Anke “then worked tirelessly to rebuild, restore, and add on. Of course the house is extremely beautiful, but I’m quite fond of the garden, which she turned into a dreamy and easy space that feels like it’s been there from the very beginning.”

The 5,900-square-foot home now has six bedrooms and five bathrooms. Set on a large lot, the property features terraces, gardens, a courtyard, and pool.

The main floor holds the library with fireplace, a formal dining and living room with an antique fireplace, a high-end kitchen, and a family room that looks out to the garden and pool.

Other perks include a wine cellar, media room with fireplace, and Sonos sound system. The bedrooms can be found on the second and third floors.

Arthur, who was vice president to President James Garfield, became president after Garfield was assassinated just months into his first term.

Known for his taste in fine furnishings and fashion, Arthur was nicknamed “Gentleman Boss” and “Elegant Arthur.” He also liked to fish, which brought him to this Sag Harbor home.

A plaque on the home commemorates his ownership: “Pres. C.A. Arthur Summer Retreat,” it notes.
