Most Expensive Listing: M Manhattan Mansion That Was Once Home to Gloria Vanderbilt

A historic Upper East Side townhouse where Gloria Vanderbilt once lived has glided onto the market for $50 million. Now reimagined, the Manhattan mansion ranks as this week’s most expensive new listing on realtor.com®.

Built in 1891 and once owned by Vanderbilt’s father, Reginald Claypoole Vanderbilt, the home was a part of Gloria’s early life. The heiress resided at the address from her birth in 1924 until her father’s death the following year, when she moved to Paris, according to the New York Post. The fashion designer, artist, and mother of CNN news anchor Anderson Cooper passed away last month at the age of 95.

Originally built by the architect Robert B. Lynd as his personal residence, the Gilded Age, neo-Grecian townhouse was modified by the architect William Strom in 1905. It was subdivided over the years, and earlier this decade, it ran into a few issues finding a buyer who wanted to resuscitate the grand dame.

Five years ago, a developer purchased the posh property for $19 million, with the intent of converting the building into three modern and luxurious apartments. In the past couple of years, the architecture firm CetraRuddy completed the structure’s transformation into three distinctive condominiums.

“It’s a rare opportunity to acquire a 27-foot-wide trophy home with a rich history that has been completely renovated,” says listing agent Lauren Muss, with Douglas Elliman.

The space also offers flexible options for a buyer of means. The building comes at $50 million, and the buyer can then decide whether to live in it as a grand, single-family home, like the moguls of yore, or take the opportunity to net serious return on investment in rental income.

“The home’s current configuration makes it an ideal property for a buyer who wants to have separate guest and staff areas, a person who wants to create an approximately 18,500-square-foot, single-family home, or a person looking to purchase it as a luxury rental property,” says Muss.

She adds, “There’s truly nothing on the market quite like it.”

Now “meticulously renovated,” the sandstone-clad building features seven stories, private elevators, and three fireplaces. Overall, the townhouse has 12 bedrooms, 11 full bathrooms, three powder rooms, and some 1,500 square feet of outdoor space.

Inside, the refurbished residences feature ceilings of up to almost 12 feet and boast high-end finishes. The upscale kitchens include limestone floors, Calacatta marble slab counters, marble-tiled walls and backsplash, and top-of-the-line appliances. 

The bathrooms offer either Calacatta or Blue de Savoie marble floors, walls, and free-standing tubs. 

The mansion is set just a block from Central Park on a picturesque street, in a prestigious neighborhood that includes the fine arts Frick Collection and upscale shopping and dining options. Now it simply needs a modern-day mogul to carry it into the future.
