An impeccably preserved home in Ontario, CA, designed by renowned African-American architect Paul Williams is on the market for $795,000.

Originally built in 1948 for Dr. R.N. Williams and designated as a historic landmark in 2006, the three-bedroom home has been lovingly preserved. Offering over 2,000 square feet of living space, the property also includes a 300-square-foot guest quarters with its own bathroom.

According to the home’s listing agent, Geoffrey Hamill—who specializes in architecturally significant homes—the home is an important piece of architectural history. It’s been the subject of home tours and was featured on the cover of the book “Forgotten Modern: California Houses 1940-1970.”

From the midcentury modern light fixtures to the Sam Maloof–built cabinetry, the entire property has been meticulously maintained. Even the home’s ’50s-era color palette hasn’t changed a shade over the decades. But for all of the home’s aesthetic beauty, Williams also added plenty of function, including a panic room complete with alarm button.

After the death of the home’s original owner, the property changed hands in 2004. The current owner has spent the past 15 years carefully repairing the property, and trying to keep it as true to its original beauty as possible.

“He just wanted this kind of property and didn’t have any intention other than to restore it,” Hamill says about the homeowner. If the right buyer came along, the seller would likely be willing to part with some of the home’s incredible period furnishings, Hamill adds.

Hamill says this home is the only residence Williams built in Ontario. The architect retired in 1973 and died in 1980, at the age of 85.

In all, Williams designed more than 3,000 structures during his career, including homes for Hollywood stars and business leaders, civic buildings, and public housing. Williams, who was also on the planning committee for Los Angeles International Airport, became the first African-American member and fellow of the American Institute of Architects.
