An eye-popping A-frame in Mountain Center, CA, is on the market for $799,000. Commissioned by the owners in 1959, the lovely home with walls of glass affords views of the Coachella Valley below as well as the surrounding mountains. Built amid a craggy landscape, the pointed roof pairs perfectly with the rocky outcroppings.

“No earth was moved nor trees felled, for economic and sentimental reasons, and the structure was fitted to the site with rare compatibility,” notes a 1962 Los Angeles Times story about the home’s construction.

The original owners were so taken with their weekend retreat, they decided to move in year-round.

And while it fits snugly with its surroundings, no one else sought to imitate the successful design.

“It’s very unique for the area. Everything around there is more traditional,” says listing agent Scott Newton.

Located in an area populated with getaway residences, the eye-catching digs could easily be offered as a short-term vacation rental when not in use by the new buyers.

The updated space offers four bedrooms and three bathrooms. The architectural wonder includes floor-to-ceiling windows, a kitchen with granite counters and high-end appliances, a newer roof and skylights, as well as new decking. The open layout includes a cozy fireplace and is flooded with natural light.

Along with updated wood finishes in the kitchen and baths, the floors have been updated to slate. Those are the only alterations to take place over the decades, Newton says.

The secluded space is around 20 minutes on a windy road from the nearest grocery store, so it’s recommended you stop for supplies first. Then invite friends, and hunker down for a long weekend on the nine-acre grounds, which include a tennis court, and a cool pool built into the rocks. Plus, there’s a steam sauna which is “perfect for winter,” Newton notes.

The icing on this A-frame awesomeness? There’s extra space for visitors. A detached guesthouse with a kitchenette and wood-burning fireplace also sits on the grounds.

Maybe not surprisingly, for a home so close to the Coachella Valley, it boasts a celebrity past.

According to local lore, rocker Sammy Hagar once owned the charming compound, perhaps some 40 or 50 years ago, Newton says.

For those seeking privacy, it makes sense. The electric-gated property in a rather remote locale could attract Hollywood types in search of an escape.

So, A-listers, take note: This A-frame just might be a perfect match.
