After four years on and off the market, the Middleburg, VA, estate that President John F. Kennedy and his wife, Jackie, bought as a weekend getaway has finally sold for $2.85 million, says Mary Ann McGowan, the Thomas and Talbot Real Estate agent who represented both buyer and seller.

The 167-acre estate overlooks the Blue Ridge Mountains and lies about 45 minutes west of Washington, DC, in an area known for its horses and fox-hunting. The Kennedys bought the place in 1962 and named it Wexford, after the Ireland county that was home to the Kennedy clan, says the Washington Post.

“It was Jackie’s little weekend retreat to bring the children out of DC,” says McGowan.

The one-level house has four or five bedrooms (depending on how you count), which the first couple used for guests and to house the president’s Secret Service detail.

The property also features a pool, tennis court, pond, and security bunker under the stable.

The bunker “hasn’t been used in 50 years,” says McGowan. “I’d recommend it be used as a wine cellar.”

The Fauquier Times says the Kennedys purchased the property for $26,000 from Hubert Phipps, the publisher who owned what is now the Fauquier Times. The paper says the Kennedys spent “quiet weekends at Wexford yet never actually spent the night. They were scheduled to return to their new home immediately after their ill-fated November 1963 trip to Dallas.” Jackie sold the estate the next year.

Wexford went back on the market in 2013 for $11 million. Over the years, the price was cut and the property bounced on and off the market. More recently, it came back with a list price of $4 million and developers showed interest, McGowan says. However, the current owners wanted to preserve the land, which comprises four parcels.

Eventually, a neighbor, retired businessman Thomas S. Price, bought the property. Price reportedly would like to open the estate to wounded warriors as a recreational retreat.
