Julia Morgan-Designed Masterpiece in Saratoga Hits Market for M

A Julia Morgan–designed masterpiece is on the market in Saratoga, CA, for $25 million. After this home’s completion in 1920, the master architect went on to create the iconic Hearst Castle in San Simeon for newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst.

The sprawling home Morgan designed in the South Bay isn’t quite a castle, but it is more than enough for most buyers. About a century ago, when Chauncey Goodrich commissioned Morgan to design the country home, the pioneering architect took on the challenge and offered her interpretation of an English country estate.

Morgan lived in a rented house on the grounds while overseeing the construction of the home. The resulting 12,500-square-foot structure is one of the largest residential buildings she worked on.

“Morgan’s vision was to create beautiful living spaces that combine style, sophistication, and comfort,” the listing notes. And although the home is nearly 100 years old, it’s said to be “luxurious, yet approachable—and relevant to today’s lifestyle.”

Now known as Hayfield House, the home includes front and back porches, easy access to the grounds, and beautiful living spaces.

Inside, you’ll find oversize rooms with beamed ceilings, a living and dining room with a fireplace, and French doors leading outside. A large kitchen offers a center island with seating. Along with five bedrooms and 6.5 bathrooms, the space includes a game room.

The gated property includes a renovated 1,800-square-foot guesthouse, also designed by Morgan, plus a more recent addition of a detached garage for four cars.

The parklike grounds include gardens, tennis courts, a pool, and lounge spaces. Hosts can easily throw parties outdoors thanks to a covered dining area, and it’s easy to whip up a feast alfresco in the outdoor kitchen.

Previous homeowners David and Roxanne Peterschmidt purchased the home in 1999, according to the San Jose Mercury News. They restored and landscaped the 5-acre property. The current owners picked up the property in 2009 for $18.5 million.

Morgan was a trailblazer and designed hundreds of buildings, leaving behind a legacy of storied homes in the Golden State. She was the first woman to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, the first to have her own architectural practice in California, and the first female winner of the American Institute of Architects Gold Medal.
