Gary Clark Jr. Renting Out His Former Speak-Easy in the Hollywood Hills

Acclaimed guitarist Gary Clark Jr. owns a buzzworthy home in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles. Built in the 1920s, the place was originally a speak-easy, where imbibers could enjoy an adult beverage outside the view of authorities.

These days it’s a four-bedroom, two-bathroom house deep in Laurel Canyon owned by the award-winning Austin native. You can catch his great vibes for yourself—he’s renting it out for $7,500 a month.

The 2,449-square-foot, two-story Craftsman has been renovated and modernized. The kitchen features professional-grade, stainless-steel appliances and radiant floor heating. The adjacent breakfast nook with booth seating gives a nod to the home’s old-school charm.

The bathrooms have been remodeled with high-end fixtures that look fresh and clean, but also give off a serious vintage vibe.

The highlight of the home is probably the sunken living room with wood floors, a soaring timber-beamed ceiling, and a double-sided river rock fireplace.

The ground-floor master suite is also special, with a coffered ceiling, brick fireplace, walk-in closet, and en suite office or studio space.

The grounds are also sweet, with dining areas, flagstone paths, a fountain, barbecue, and private hot tub.

All this, and a two-car garage for $7,500? If the price raises an eyebrow, public records indicate it initially went up for rent in May at $12,500 a month. It looks like Clark purchased the place in 2017 for $1,525,500.

Clark, 34, first picked up a guitar at the age of 12, and hasn’t stopped playing since. He honed his skills at the famous Austin music club known as Antone’s, the same place where Jimmie and Stevie Ray Vaughan got their starts. He’s played with greats including Sheryl Crow, Dave Grohl, and the Dave Matthews Band. He’s played the country’s most prominent music festivals, and has performed his songs in movies and TV shows, including “Friday Night Lights,” “Suits,” and “House of Lies.”

Clark is married to model Nicole Trunfio, and they have two young children.
