‘Cheers’ Producer Raises a Final Glass to His Classic Venice Bungalow

It’s last call for “Cheers” writer/executive producer Rob Long in the beloved Venice, CA, bungalow he painstakingly restored. He’s just put his home of more than 20 years on the market for $3.75 million.

The Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated writer and producer spent years renovating the 1909 home, retaining its original architecture while artfully weaving in modern conveniences.

“I opened it up a little bit and built out the second story,” Long says of his 2,936-square-foot, classic bungalow. “But I kept that big green door and brought back the original shutters. I wanted to preserve the original look and feel.”

One of his favorite improvements is the work he did on the kitchen, adding wine refrigerators, a Sub-Zero refrigerator, and a bluestone island. But the crown jewel is the handcrafted La Cornue stove.

“If you work it right, you can make dinner for over 100 people on that stove,” he says. He’s done it—and the salmon came out spectacular.

The apparent food aficionado also loves entertaining, evidenced by the addition of an Earthstone pizza oven on the terrace, the type used by the famous Pizzeria Mozza.

But hold the pepperoni. Long says he uses the pizza oven for fish these days because the 800-degree heat makes the skin perfectly “nice and crispy.” He notes he’s also had great success with pork crown roasts.

Despite his love of all things gustatory, Long says the room in the home he loves best has nothing to do with food, although a cookbook or two might be stored there.

His favorite spot is the striking cherrywood library. The custom built-in shelving is artfully done, and low-maintenance.

“Every couple of weeks you just run some lemon oil on the woodwork, and the whole house smells so good,” he says.

Love and attention were lavished on every room in the house. The four bedrooms and 3.5 baths are all standouts in their own way. The bedrooms have beautiful wood flooring and windows, and one even has its own private balcony. The bathrooms also have unique touches.

And then there’s the hip neighborhood, which is close to Abbot Kinney Boulevard, which has become the heart of Venice with its restaurants, shops, and galleries.

Now you might be wondering how, after investing so much heart and soul into the home, Long could bear to part with it. He says it wasn’t an easy decision, because he loves the home and “had some epic parties there.” However, after 30 years of living in Southern California, he’s heading home to New York, where he will continue his media career.
