Classic Cliff May Hacienda in Rancho Santa Fe on the Market for .45M

Cliff May was noted for bringing the ranch-style house to the masses. However, the esteemed builder also drew up plans for a number of multimillion-dollar mansions for well-heeled buyers.

One of those custom-designed properties just came on the market in Rancho Santa Fe, CA, with a price tag of $6.45 million.

Built in 1974, it’s one of his signature hacienda-style homes with a tile roof and floors, white-washed stucco walls, and an abundance of arches.

However, this particular home is bigger than most of his other haciendas. It measures 5,740 square feet—all a single level—and sits on a 3-acre lot. It has four bedrooms and 4.5 baths.

And thanks to its historical significance, it’s been designated under California’s Mills Act, which gives an owner substantial property tax advantages.

The home’s true significance is in its remarkable aesthetics. The current owners thoughtfully and completely restored the home, adding modern conveniences without compromising the original design.

The home features a large outdoor courtyard, which is lined by a lengthy patio and accessed by French doors. Amendments to the home’s classic style include dramatic skylights that run the length of the gabled roof. Colorful Spanish tiles in the kitchen and bathrooms have been restored and updated.

The listing notes that Diane Keaton, who restored a May home of her own, used this particular home to research her book, “California Romantica.” Gregory Peck, Ben Affleck, Sean Penn, and Adam Levine are other celebs who have owned May-designed homes.
