Strawberry House

While the popular ’60s-era show “Mad Men” ended years ago, the popularity of stylish homes from the period continues unabated.

For example, take this delicious midcentury modern abode known as the Strawberry house. It sprouted on the market in Encino, CA, earlier this month for $2.85 million. Within seven days, a buyer plucked the vintage home from the shelf.

“Some properties just fly off the shelf,” says listing agent Angelo Fierro of Compass. In addition to its coveted architectural pedigree, “we priced it really well.”

The four-bedroom, 3.5-bath home is a true classic, evocative of the atomic age. The sellers owned it for six years and faithfully restored the place, taking care not to disturb the home’s elegant lines.

Designed by the Los Angeles architecture firm Benton & Park, the space was thoroughly brought into the modern era while maintaining gorgeous original touches, including the terrazzo flooring.

Built in 1964, the 3,368-square-foot home features glass walls showcasing views of the hillside, mountain, and city from nearly every room. The oversize front doors open to a living space with fireplace and original wet bar, perfect for cocktail hour.

The remodeled kitchen now features custom walnut cabinetry and Caesarstone counters. It looks out to a casual dining area and the dining room.

The master suite includes a solar-powered skylight, which highlights the bath’s soaking tub as well as steam shower.

Other updates include California walnut flooring throughout the main living areas, and a hallway with gallery walls on which to display an art collection.

Eco-friendly upgrades include solar panels and an electric car-charging station.

The outdoors exemplifies quintessential California living, with a sparkling pool and pebble-finished patio. This resort vibe was famously distilled by Rolling Stone, which photographed Jon Hamm, who played Don Draper in “Mad Men,” at the home when the show’s popularity was at its height. The iconic residence was also featured in the Showtime series “Ray Donovan.”

Of course, this being Southern California, there’s a celebrity history as well. The home was previously owned by Crystal Method band member Ken Jordan. He sold the home for $1.65 million in 2013.

Fierro notes that Encino is home to other midcentury modern gems by famous names such as Richard Neutra and Joseph Eichler.

“There’s not a lot of them,” he adds. “This is not cookie-cutter. These homes are built for aficionados.”
