An architecturally significant home in Portland, OR, designed by organic architect Robert Harvey Oshatz has landed on the market for the first time in 30 years.

Built in 1984, the $1.15 million home belongs to Charlie and Miriam Rosenthal, who fell in love with the angular, mod design the moment they first laid eyes on it.

It was the mid-’80s and the Rosenthals were relocating to Portland from New Jersey and looking at homes. On the way to another listing, the Rosenthals happened by the Oshatz home and something magical happened.

“It was the way it thrust out from the hillside,” Miram recalls. “It was enchanting.”

A few weeks later, they drove by again—this time the home’s resident was outside. Miriam struck up a conversation and quickly realized she was talking to the architect himself. Oshatz was living in the home he had built on spec and was ready to part with the place.

The Rosenthals and Oshatz struck up a friendship that’s still strong today. The couple worked with Oshatz to customize the incredible space, designed to frame glorious views of Mount Hood. Miriam oversaw the creation of the home’s Japanese gardens, and the couple filled the interiors with their impressive collection of Native American art and artifacts.

Orshaz explains he lived in the home for three years before selling it. “And almost immediately I had seller’s remorse. But if I was going to sell it to anyone, I’m glad it was the Rosenthals.”

The home was built with two important things in mind: privacy and natural light. He says he wanted as much of both as he could achieve.

“It’s a shaft coming out of the ground, and like a flower it blooms when it hits the sunlight,” he says about the home. The result is a stunning four-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom, 3,600-square-foot home sitting on a quarter-acre in the woods.

The home has been featured on HGTV and in magazines. Miriam says that even after all these years in the home, she still finds small details, angles, and spaces she hasn’t noticed before. “It’s a very pleasant house to live in,” she says.

Folks regularly stop by wanting to know about her interesting home on the hill.

“I’ve made many friends just because of the house,” she says, adding that the neighborhood is near the Portland Japanese Gardens and other landmarks.

With Charlie’s recent passing, Miriam is looking to downsize.

“There have been a flurry of agents through the house,” listing agent Craig Weintz says of the house’s popularity with interested buyers.

Buyers who are interested in the Rosenthal residence might also be happy to learn that Oshatz just signed a deal to custom-build five homes on five lots he’s handpicked in the area. The lots will be available beginning April 15.

Oshatz explains he builds “structures at peace in their environment and so that people are at peace in the structure.”

And the Rosenthal residence remains, all these years later, an exquisite example of both.
