Silicon Valley Style: M Ultramodern Pad Wows in Palo Alto

Palo Alto—home to Stanford University and dozens of tech companies—is one of the Silicon Valley cities where historic and modern homes now co-exist on the same street.

Built in 2017, this 6,000-square-foot modern masterpiece in the city’s coveted Crescent Park neighborhood is on the market for $7 million, which is nearly triple the city’s median listing price of $2.5 million.

A true original, the six-bedroom, 4.5-bath home was inspired by Hawaii. Nowhere is this truer than the windows that retract into walls. In fact, the entire first floor features walls of glass.

“They’ve always been interested in architecture,” listing agent Michael Repka of DeLeon Realty says of the sellers, “and they love the tropical Hawaiian type of environment. The sellers were living there while they were doing the construction. The home is a labor of love.”

The home includes automated control for lighting, temperature, music, and security. And modern materials were used everywhere, including the distinctive choice of stainless steel for the soaking tub in one of the baths.

“You have an incredible basement that is all lit up,” says Repka, thanks to translucent panels embedded into the ceiling. Basements are rare in the San Francisco Bay Area, and a basement this well-conceived is rarer still.

Creating outdoor space, particularly in an urban setting with limited space, was also a priority. A two-story deck and artful landscaping on the lot are well-suited for everything from al fresco dining to entertaining a family with young kids.

The Crescent Park neighborhood is a huge draw because bustling University Avenue—with shops, restaurants, and a historic movie theater—is only a short walk away.

“You’re within walking distance of downtown, but you still feel like you’re in a residential area,” says Repka. “Unlike other parts of Palo Alto, it doesn’t feel as crowded. You have beautiful tree-lined streets.”

Will a design lover scoop up this retreat or will it be a family (due to the six bedrooms)—or both?

“It will probably be a family that wants to take advantage of the schools,” says Repka. “The listing’s also been very appealing to people who understand and love technology but also like to walk to University Avenue and are attracted to a vibrant lifestyle.”
