Tampa Home of Late Yankees Owner George Steinbrenner Available for .75M

The mansion of the late New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner and his wife, Joan Steinbrenner, is now in play. The gated estate in Tampa, FL, is available for $5.75 million.

Known simply as “The Boss,” George died in 2010, and Joan in 2018. 

Purchased in 2000 for $3.8 million, the place has been kept in “perfect condition,” according to the listing. 

So how did one of the towering figures of late 20th-century baseball live? Let’s take a look around.

At 13,480 square feet, the home built in 1958 is one of the largest on the Palma Ceia Golf Course. You enter through a graceful, two-story hall with black-and-white checkerboard tile. The entry is flanked by the formal living and dining rooms. These rooms flow into a spacious rec room and bar, family room, kitchen, library, and office.

One entire side of the seven-bedroom home looks out to a garden with vine-covered arches and a pool.

There’s a downstairs master suite and an upstairs suite. The latter comes with a kitchenette and two walk-in closets. Both bedroom suites have views of the pool and golf course. 

In addition, there’s a media room, which leads to a one-bedroom apartment with a kitchen, living space, and dining room. The home also comes with an elevator.

Steinbrenner, a shipping industry mogul, purchased the then-struggling Yankees franchise in 1973 for $8.7 million. Over his decades in control of the MLB’s marquee franchise, the team won seven World Series championships. As of this year, the Yankees are worth an estimated $4.2 billion and controlled by Steinbrenner’s two sons.

Although Steinbrenner lived in Tampa full time, he became a New York cultural icon. His fame reached a pop culture apex when he became a character on the hit sitcom “Seinfeld,” with his permission. Portrayed by Lee Bear, his character was filmed only from the back, and the show’s co-creator Larry David provided the fast-talking voice of The Boss.

Steinbrenner died at the age of 80.
